CK Builders knows roofing. We can answer all of your roofing questions to determine if asphalt shingles are the right choice for your home and budget.
While it indeed has a lower up-front cost, there are other factors one needs to consider when determining the right roofing product for your home. These include the quality of the shingle, installation practices & experience, climate, energy efficiency, and life expectancy.
Asphalt shingles are a petroleum-based product that utilizes fiberglass to reinforce its structure. Rolled and strip shingles are the least expensive asphalt product as they have only one layer. The most common shingle is the 30-year architectural shingle which typically has two layers in alternating areas which give the shingle a textured appearance. Luxury asphalt shingle are also available with three to four alternating layers giving the shingle a defined texture and longer life expectancy. Shingle style, material thickness, roof pitch, and climate all contribute to the life expectancy of asphalt shingles.
Asphalt shingles are attached direct to deck using nails or staples. This direct to deck application allows for heat transfer directly to or from your attic space or home. Asphalt shingles are available in a wide variety of colors and styles, are easily accessible, and fairly easy to install. However, they are not wind, fire or hail resistant, long lasting, or environmentally friendly. You can expect a 30-year architectural shingle to remain in good shape for 15-20 years depending on the above-mentioned factors.
