Here in American Fork, Utah we have had some crazy rain over the last few days. As we have built homes and repaired roofs all over Utah County we have found a wide array of different roofing materials used. Given the recent weather and the winter that is just a few months away, we wanted to talk about the best roofing materials for harsh weather are especially for our customers in Utah.
1. Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt roofs in Utah are probably the most common thing we see. Asphalt shingles are inexpensive and do a great job protecting the home. Another great spin on asphalt shingles are fiberglass asphalt shingles which are surrounded by a layer of asphalt and then coated with mineral granules in order to offer better protection in crazy weather.
Asphalt is also popular because it can come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. This means that home owners and home construction companies have a chance to really customize their roofs appearance.
2. Concrete Tile
More people are beginning to use concrete tile roofs. This roofing material offers a beautiful look that you cannot get with some of the other roofing materials. Not only this, but it is one of the most durable. One of the main reasons we have seen more and more people decide to use concrete tile roofing material is because they have such a long lifetime. While the exact lifetime may vary based on a few distinct factors, it is absolutely safe to say that a concrete tile roof will last at least the life of the house.
3. Metal Roofing
Metal roofing is a particular roofing material that has had increasing demand over the last 30 years or so as people have desired to get more durability out of their roofs at a lower cost. Metal roofing has a function aspect to it that other roofing materials in American Fork simply don’t have. Metal roofing is the most fire resistant roofing material out there and it also much better performance with precipitation. Rain and snow shed right off a metal roof in ways that stone, asphalt, and wood simply don’t.
4. Clay Tiles
Clay tile roofing is famous for its longevity and aesthetic appeal. They perform very well but are not typically considered to be the best option for harsh weather conditions. When it comes to Spanish tile roofing in Utah, it is used more for curb appeal and low maintenance. Clay tile roofing is more prominent in Southern Utah where weather conditions can be a little less harsh.
5. Stone Coated Steel Roofing
This is a relatively newer roofing material in Utah. One reason people love stone coated steel roofing is because it uses cutting edge acrylic technology to coat the outside of the material. This provides top level protection from the elements especially UV rays. The upfront cost of this roofing material is a little bit higher, but it is an investment in energy saving that will pay off very quickly especially considering how much climate control we need for most of the year here in Utah.
Picking the right roofing material can be daunting especially when there are so many. Roofs are what cover your home and protect you from the elements and you want to make sure that you make the best decision.
